Vlogging. It’s an art.
PewDiePie has 85 million subscribers on YouTube. That’s right. 85 million.
How’d he do that? What’s the secret?
Have you ever wondered how PewDiePie gained those 85 million subscribers on YouTube?
I have. And guess what? I haven’t figured it out.
But I do know this; the key to attracting subscribers to your channel lies in your ability to understand the psyche of your potential-subscriber.
As I’ve researched vlogging, I’ve managed to come up with a list of the 5 types of subscribers every vlogger comes across and how to attract & engage them:
- The anonymous
These subscribers are the most common ones on any video streaming platform. They are the ones who actively wait for your videos but don’t like, comment or share, simply logging-into your channel to watch your videos before exiting.
These viewers are shy or they may be unsure about engaging with you. To attract them, you need to make the first move. Give them a complimentary product or a free service trial in exchange for subscribing to your channel.
- The “firsts”
Unlike their anonymous counterparts, the “firsts” absolutely love to engage with the vlogger. These are the folks who like and comment the moment you upload videos. They actively start a conversation with you and are die-hard fans. They remain most-loyal when their enthusiasm is rewarded with appreciation. Always make sure you like their comments and reply to their messages. Be sure to mention them in another comment and invite further engagement.
They are the ones most-likely to subscribe to your channel quickly and bring you new subscribers.
- The comment kings
Have you ever had that viewer who asks questions that have nothing to do with your video? Or perhaps you’ve had the viewer who provides feedback even when you haven’t asked for it?
We dub these viewers the “comment kings.”
They love to start conversations with vloggers and they usually do this to bring attention to their own profiles. With these viewers, you will need to follow a give-and-take policy.
Visit their channel and like/comment/share their videos Reply to their comments, thank them for the feedback, and maybe pose questions of your own.
This kind of engagement is sure to bear fruit and bring you a new subscriber.
- The naysayers
Naysayers are people who express their disagreement or displeasure about your content – posting mostly negative or hate-ridden comments. Don’t worry. Every vlogger has them And sadly, there is no escaping them.
One way to deal with a naysayer is to respond to their negative comments. If you have a valid explanation for your case, then a response is a good way to stimulate a healthy discussion. If they make a fair point, be generous and accept it.
If you don’t have a good point to make or you believe the naysayer will continue to post bad comments, just ignore them and let them vent. Adding fuel to fire will only make things worse.
Avoid deleting these negative comments. This will show how fair-minded you are and will encourage other subscribers to take you more seriously. For every one viewer you lose to hate, you gain many more who appreciate you for maturity.
- The value seekers
These viewers are the most slippery of all. They jump ship the moment they perceive better value from another vlogger. They are also the kind who actively campaign against you if they perceive low value from your channel.
Be sure to reward them if you have complimentary services or products to offer. And always mention your channel when doing so.
You can also seek their inputs about the kind of content they wish to see . This ensures that you create videos that are of value to your viewers. An in-channel poll is a great way to engage value seekers.
